Our client is a leading supplier of building materials in the UK, and operates a group of businesses both in the UK and internationally. They now require a Head of Sustainability to lead the UK’s sustainable development programme. Key Objectives

Implementing a comprehensive and technically competent sustainability strategy which satisfies all relevant internal and external stakeholders

Influence and lead employees at all levels of the organisation, in addition to a wide range of external groups

This role will cover sustainability issues as they relate to regulation, technical/operations and commercial, including the sustainable development of products and communication of the sustainable credentials of the business
Reporting
The role is key to the development of the organisation and therefore the role holder will report directly to the Board.
Role Overview
-
To identify the critical sustainability factors for each business unit and develop appropriate business specific plans linked to the overall UK sustainability framework.

Ensure that statutory sustainability obligations, including those related to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EUETS), Climate Change Agreements (CCA) and the forthcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), are clearly understood, implemented and managed. Ensure that these regulatory requirements are managed within a co-ordinated carbon management strategy.

You will ensuring that the company understands the regulations/challenges relating to sustainability and has strategies in place to address them and to make sure the business management are aware of all upcoming regulations and other issues and develops strategies to deal with them.

Develop sustainability KPIs, targets, data reporting, and verification systems for the UK business.

Co-ordinate and drive action on all existing sustainability related activity throughout the UK business. Ensure internal buy-in to cross-divisional / cross-functional sustainable initiatives.

Set the priorities, plan and coordinate actions and resources in conjunction with the businesses to achieve the sustainability targets.

Provide direction and coordinate representation to ensure that the company is effectively represented on relevant industry and government groups and on regulatory/legislative matters related to sustainability e.g. UKCP, TCC, BCA/Cembureau, BLA/EuLA, QPA, BSi, BRE, ETG, BERR, Defra, EA, etc.

Lobby and exert influence on key future policy, regulation and EU/UK government groups e.g. EUETS, CCA, CRC, CSH, Waste Directive, Minerals Planning.

Develop and maintain a central data/knowledge bank of the company policies and positions which businesses can use where necessary to respond to invitations to tender and enquiries from customers.

Design and where appropriate deliver training programmes that promote sustainability literacy at all levels in the organisation.

Work with technical and marketing teams within the company to identify a set of key messages to promote sustainability performance and support their delivery to customers and other stakeholders through a communication programme, to include annual report(s). Support the businesses in ensuring that the sustainable credentials of the product range and services meet the needs of the market and help the businesses to develop and promote product specific sustainability messages consistent with the overall key messages.

Support the engagement with local communities, NGO’s, pressure groups, and research institutions in sustainable development related initiatives/ strategies.
You will

Be able to demonstrate the technical credibility and competence to be able to effectively communicate and influence a range of external parties including EU, government, statutory bodies, pressure groups, trade associations, local communities, media, customers and the marketplace generally.

Have the ability to identify and effectively communicate key sustainability issues at all levels, including BMT, and to manage and presenting against a set of sustainability measures.

Possess the ability to inspire behaviours which continually improve and reinforce the required sustainable development culture.
Knowledge and Skills
-
Posses the technical competence, detailed knowledge, understanding and experience of the complex technical aspects related to UK government and European Commission / Parliament / Council strategies on climate change related to energy intensive and other businesses.
Will have a comprehensive understanding of where and how government strategies might apply to our energy intensive businesses and other product streams.

Be able to demonstrate the business strategic and tactical awareness to link complex technical issues with commercial reality and opportunity.

Extensive experience and knowledge of lobbying on sustainability issues at industry, UK government and EU levels.

Possess experience of sustainability performance measurement, evaluation and improvement or equivalent.

Ideally have a proven background in influencing a range of internal and external stakeholders in sustainability related issues.

Have a background in training members of the organisation in sustainability related matters.

Ideally have worked in a similar construction related environment but not essential
